Centro Educacion Basica Especial Trujillo (CEBET) is a governmental institution for children with severe disabilities or multiple disabilities located in Trujillo, Peru. This institution is one of the few special education schools accessible for children and young adults with low socioeconomic status. However, CEBET has minimal financial support; consequently, the classrooms and materials are very basic, despite being a governmental institution. The children lack the proper equipment, and mostly everything is handmade by the teachers employed at CEBET. The faculty works hard to help develop the students’ quotidian activities along with their primary education. The teachers involved do not have the required training; nevertheless, they work hard to provide the best care and education they can offer.
Social work volunteers have worked with these teachers and the students for the past six months. The volunteers assist the understaffed teachers with the children. Some of the activities these teachers try to accomplish daily are showing the children how to eat, personal hygiene, and getting dressed. The children are also involved in art projects, which have made them appreciate their daily music lessons and painting.
Last month IChangePeru donated a new kitchen for the school. When the volunteers appeared at the school, the mothers were very limited to what meals they could offer the children. There were only a couple of pots available, and they had to be used outside over a wood stove. Thanks to the donations of volunteers, IChangePeru has been able to provide them with a new kitchen set, including a stove, pots, pans, utensils, dishes, cups, among other equipment. The children are now able to enjoy their breakfast along with their classmates.
The organization is immensely grateful for all the donations; THANK YOU!
